For International Women’s Day 2019 The Peace Museum in Bradford is joined by Impressions Gallery‘s Dr Pippa Oldfield who will present ‘Women at the Peace Tables: Photography and the Paris Peace Conference, 1919’ a talk focusing on women and the post-war peace.
Dr Pippa Oldfield, Head of Progamme at Impressions Gallery, shares her research on women’s photography in the wake of the First World War. Inspired by the discovery of a photographic printing block in The Peace Museum, Pippa uncovers the surprising ways in which women used photography to record and re-imagine peace processes.
This International Women’s Day event is programmed as part of The Peace Museum’s exhibition A Flawed Peace? which explores the post First World War peace through the perspectives of different nations, peace groups, and individuals.
The exhibition features original printing blocks from the Women’s International Congress in Zurich which was held at the same time as the Peace Treaty of Versailles and hosted over 200 women from 17 nations. At this conference, the International Congress of Women regrouped to form a new organization who opposed the Treaty of Versailles named the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Research into WILPF has been carried out by Impressions Gallery’s Young Artist Collective New Focus and forms part of the exhibition along with new prints made from the blocks.
Schedule:
5-6pm Arrival and time to view the exhibition
6-6.05pm Short introduction by Shannen Johnson
6.05- 6.45pm Talk by Dr Pippa Oldfield

The exhibition will run until Friday 28th June 2019 with a closing event 5.30 – 7.30pm, which will mark 100 years since the Treaty of Versailles was signed.
